The retina iMac is a great deal considering the display, and since you've already got the Air maybe that's you'd be good to go, literally. The answer is yes! Like any other machine, you can upgrade your Macbook Pro and you don’t even need to pay Apple for the privilege.Īdd more RAM and you can enjoy faster load times and be able to run more applications at the same time. So the MBP 15" and base retina iMac are pretty neck-to-neck in performance and even storage.

But in many many ways an iMac is just a portable slapped in a display's case. I guess it was a sign of my age that I still carry the assumption that MBP's are always a compromise in speed and such. Some people don't realize how fast those portables are. When docked the retina doesn't even get used, but having a decent workspace on the go I find vital for dev work.

It's not up to the maxed out Mac Pro speeds but it's just as fast away from my desk as it is docked. Personally, I needed a mobile dev workstation so run a maxed out 15" rMBP attached to external screens.

I keep only OS and software on the 500GB HD and use external drives for data and back up I am happy!Īssuming you don't want a mobile development machine get the iMac and sell the old MBP It runs like a cheetah, does not hiccup and has been fine for running Aperture, Photos, and Affinity and Final Cut Pro. I am running a mid-2010 21.5 inch iMac in which I have installed 16GB of ram. For a lot of stuff it's faster than the MP.īut it's really hard to say without knowing what you do with it.

But if you do intend to start doing 4k video editing (is that why you mention Mac Pro?) then perhaps skip the update and go straight to the fastest, baddest retina iMac. The SSD would in that case make a nice investment since it speeds up loading is the best bang for the buck. If you're not doing a lot of photo editing, RAW development, video, etc than you probably don't need a new Mac, since just viewing photos, web browsing, email, etc don't require it. You haven't said what you need these machines to do though. The MBA may not be super capacious or speedy either, but it is more portable, if that matters, in terms of size. For $300US-ish you could upgrade to over 400GB SSD and to 16GB RAM (from just a quick look at ).īut it seems like if you have a MBA you don't need it, or vice versa. SSDs are down in price, and RAM is pretty affordable, but it's not gonna turn that into a speed demon. It can't do much development, or not at an acceptable pace, but it's decent for storing images off the card, for running DVDs (since I have no player at home), and showing photos and such. Not sure what you mean by "back to back." I use an even more ancient 2.26 Core Duo with 8GB when I'm traveling. Has anyone used an older macbook pro and a new imac back to back. For the record, in addition to photography the machine will be used for network trouble shooting and development work. I'm getting my wife's 2011 macbook air for mobile stuff, but I need a production machine at home. Part of the issue is, if I buy a new mac my old mac is just going to sit here. The mac mini seems inadequate for my needs, and I have no interest in going back to windows. I won't go mac pro because the cost is more than I care to spend.

I'm trying to decide if I want to add more ram, and a solid state drive to my current machine, or get a new Imac. It wasn't the harddrive it was one of the sticks of ram. I had 16 at one point but I had issues that appeared to be harddrive related. It has a 2.2 i7 processor, and 8 gigs of ram. My current machine is a late 2011 15" macbook pro.

I'm considering getting a new mac, or adding ram to my existing machine.
